Bowen Neighbourhood Centre

As restrictions have been sufficiently lifted, the Mingle and Move Program has recommenced at the Bowen Neighbourhood Centre.    There were still six weeks of the initial 12 week program left to complete when COVID restrictions were announced.

The project is a joint initiative of the NQ Sporting Foundation (NQ Funded program), the Whitsunday Shire Council and the Bowen Neighbourhood Centre. The initiative targets those community members who may be at risk of social isolation to reengage with others in a fun and supportive way. There is no cost to participants.

Icebreaker activities occur at the start of each session so that participants get to know each other a little better with a view to facilitating friendships with other like-minded participants.   It is further anticipated that participants physical activities will increase post the program and that they may have formed a friendship to attend future activities with, or even go out for a coffee together.

The activities in the program have included boxing, yoga, meditation, lawn bowls, water aerobics and line dancing.

Biometrics were taken at the start of the program for comparison at the end.  The Whitsunday Shire Council normally provide a healthy morning tea after each of the weekly events for participants to stay on and have a chat which further enhances community connectiveness and therefore reduces feelings of social isolation.

Well done to all involved with such a fantastic way to connect members of the community, in a healthy way!
